Melbourne 1946 and Bill May, a musician and woodwork teacher, set out to produce a quality guitar built by musicians for musicians. Bill was a craftsman, passionate about quality and like many musicians he was dedicated to finding his own unique tone.
The “May-tone” (Maton) Bill established the Maton Guitar Company and began production of traditional Arch Top, or F-hole guitars such as the Supreme, the Starline (4606) and the Mayfair. All of which rapidly gained favour amongst his peers. 3 In 1958, inspired by the increasing popularity of Rock & Roll, Maton produced the first Mastersound 500 (MS500). It was an instant classic and in the years that followed the MS500 found it’s way into the hands of musicians everywhere, including George Harrison, the Easybeats, the Kinks and two talented young virtuoso’s called Tommy & Phil Emmanuel.
Through the 60’s and 70’s the company tripled in size in order to satisfy the growing demand for electric guitars. And international artists touring Australia often included a trip to the Maton Factory in Canterbury Rd, just to get their hands on one. Today more and more recording artists are turning to the Maton electric range to find their tone. From the MS500’s up to the 60th Anniversary Starline (4606), each Maton guitar carries with it more than 60 years of Rock & Roll history and the memory of a million riffs. So if you’re serious about tone and have been searching for that special guitar - .... You’ve found it.
